The Road Home

May 6, 2007

So, we left Kansas City in the midst of a tornado watch, wind and rain-blasted for the whole ride through Kansas. I thought I could stay awake and keep Josh company (I always feel like getting across Kansas is the hardest part) but I ended up nodding off about every ten minutes for six hours. I have some vague recollection of waking up three or four times and turning up the oldies station and belting out “Someday we’ll be Together” by Diana Ross and a few others, but other than that, I don’t remember much about the first third of this highway jaunt.

Right now we’re camped out in a hotel in Colorado, with stable internet (finally!) and cable TV and a bar & grill next door whose sign reads simply “Restaurant”. We went there for dinner earlier. Josh leaned across the table to me and said “That creep behind you (he said ‘creep’! you can totally tell we’ve been watching TV today!) picked a beet off the salad bar and ate it – with his fingers! – while he was waiting to be seated!”

I stared out the window and nodded at Josh’s outrage. “I can beat that” I said.

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah. I’m watching a guy with a Great Dane on a leash pee on the rear wheel of his truck right now. Also, his dog is wearing a bandanna”.

“The dog is peeing, or the guy?”

“Now? Both.”

“Ah.”

Welcome to Limon, Colorado. Tomorrow, we’ll be home.
